The 8th EAMJA conference held in Arusha on 17-21 May, 2010

The 8th EAMJA (East African Magistrates and Judges Association) conference was held in Arusha at the Ngurudoto Mountain Lodge between the 17th to the 21st of May, 2010. Members from national Associations JMAT, KMJA, UJOA, CMJA and EACJ were in attendance. Rwanda was also represented at the conference.

The theme of the Conference was ‘The Role of National Courts and Regional Courts in Protecting Human Rights and Developing Human Rights Jurisprudence.’

The Conference was opened by His Excellency Jakaya Kikwete the President of the Republic of Tanzania. The retiring Chief Justice of Tanzania, Mr Augustino Ramadhani played host to the Chief Justices from sister East African nations Uganda, Kenya and Zanzibar. He, in his remarks lauded the government for improving the remuneration of the judges, saying it motivated them to work even harder than before. He also stated that Tanzania upholds and encourages the freedom of speech and that the judiciary considered it ‘most sacred of all freedoms.’

 Various papers were presented on the Role of National and Regional Courts in protecting human rights and developing human rights jurisprudence; the Role and place of Media, civil society and Academia in safeguarding and promoting human rights; the Role of the Media, Civil Society and intellectuals in safeguarding and promoting human rights; the Role of National and regional Courts in Protecting human rights and developing Human rights Jurisprudence: The Ugandan experience; the Right to Political Participation and Elections in East Africa; Facilitating access to justice through legal Aid; Models ,Laws and Practices in East Africa: A case of Uganda;  the Right to Political Participation and Elections in East Africa; facilitating access to justice through legal aid services and on the role of the media; the role of the civil society and the academia in safeguarding and promoting human rights in EA and the right to political participation and elections in the region.

Role of the judiciary in elections in Tanzania – Hon Justice R.V Makaramba

The 2011 Conference will be held in Uganda and hosted by the Uganda Judicial Officers Association (UJOA). The Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association (CMJA) Conference 2010 will be held between 13-16, 2010, University of Brighton, Mithras, Brighton House,UK. 


" The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the East African Magistrates and Judges Association was held on 24th October, 2019, starting from 9. am, at MADINAT AL BAHR HOTEL in ZANZIBAR."

On 1 August 2018,HE Paul Kagame recieve the oath of 17 judges,including that of Justice Cyanzayire Aloysie ,Supreme Court Judge,Justice Kalimunda Muyoboke Aime and Justice Mukamulisa Therese respectively President and Vice President of the newly created Court of Appeals,11judges of the Court of Appeal,Hon Ndahayo Xavier ,New President of the High Court ,Hon Rutazana Angeline and Hon Kanzayire Bernadette ,respectively Vice President of the Commercial High Court and the High Court. The Executive Council of the East African Magestrates and judges Association will meet in Kigali ,Rwanda from 29th to 30th March,2019,to conduct business of the Association as outlined in the Agenda


New appointment in the Tanzanian Judiciary:1.Hon Ferdinand Wambali has been elevated to the Court of Apeal along with Hon. Mwanaisha Kwariko.Wambali was the PJ.His place has been taken by Hon.Dr Feleshi. 2.Hon Angelus Rumisha has been appointed registrar commercial Court which means he has been transferred to Dar Es Salaam.3.There are quite a few other oppointments and transfers at the level of Deputy Registrars.


President Museveni has elevated five judicial officers to the position of full registrars of Courts of Judicature.The promoted judicial officers who were previously on the rank of Deputy registrars are:Immaculate Byaruhanga busingye ;Esta Nambayo ;Emmy Vincent Mugabo ;Isah Sserunkuma and Philip Odoki. On 29 june 2018, EACJ bid farewell to justice Isaac Lenaola,DPJ and Geraldine ,Her worship,Deputy registrar.Both of them have completed their tenure at EACJ.Also Justice Charles Nyachae who replaces Justice Lenaola was welcomed.
